History lesson, Bernie. The 2nd Amendment has nothing to do with hunting! It is so armed citizens can fight back 'with equal force' if the government becomes tyrannical. We are not equally armed, they have 3-round burst and full-auto, we have semi-auto, not to mention the rest of their munitions. Speaking of semi-auto, these "assault weapons" you mentioned having the ability to shoot faster is pure BS. Unless it is modified after the purchase, i.e., bump stocks, it shoots one round per trigger pull just like handguns. Another lie is that people can walk into a gun show and buy a gun without a background check. It is ILLEGAL! The only exception for unlicensed people, which is true in most cases, is that the weapon is shipped to your local FFL dealer after the mandatory 3-day waiting period and that shop runs the background before handing over the weapon. This is a very common and very deceptive way to make this argument by omitting half of the story. The only people allowed to buy same day either have their concealed carry license and still go through a background check first, or a federal firearms license holder, i.e., another gun dealer in most cases. No unlicensed civilian can walk out of a gunshow with a purchased weapon, it is a myth and a lie.

What an idiot! Example - I travel between LA and Austin, the same meal at Chic Fillet is 60% more money in LA. Guess what the min wage delta is between the 2 cities - 66%. Does Bernie think the business owners are going to eat the increase in wage..? It's passed on! So there goes the extra money these people are making, cause they have to pay the higher prices too. I could go on and on. Socialism is for stupid people.

Funny. The whole higher wages = higher standart of living equasion seems to work out just fine here in Europe. Not to mention that your argument, if it were valid, could be used to justify paying people 2 cents an hour. If you can't make sufficiently profitable use of an employee to pay them a living wage, your buisness does not deserve to exist. And if you can make sufficient profit off them to do so but don't, you're just exploiting them. And people like you are justifying that exploitation.

I'm conservative, but Bernie seems pretty reasonable here. I don't agree with him about pretty much anything, but I can tell he does care about Americans even if he does own two mansions. I do think that something needs to be done about the big pharmaceutical companies charging exuberant prices, but I do wonder if that extra money goes to developing new drugs which America almost single handedly. I don't agree with raising the minimum wage to $15 or forgiving student debt. If you rise the minimum wage either businesses will fail and those people will lose their jobs, or they will replace all the mundane repetitive jobs with machines. Even if they keep all their employees after the minimum wage has been increased, the prices for the products will skyrocket. This would also hit smaller companies harder because the larger companies are more efficient and can burden the costs of increased wages easier. This would destroy smaller independent businesses and strengthen the giant corporations, giving more power to the people Bernie calls the enemy. These companies are also more capable at automation. I'm not surprised Amazon pays it's employees $15/hr since half of it's business is automated. Personally, I believe in independence and freedom too much to vote for Bernie. That includes dealing with my own problems instead of giving them over to the government. He also supports abortion so it's not like I would vote for him or any other democrat anyway.

In the hope of having found someone with whom one can have reasonable discourse, I'd like to pose a question: How did America get into a situation where you have hundrets of thousands of people working full time, but are still below the poverty line? Productivity has increased, but the vast majority of the profits went to the very top. Do you think that it is right that American workers don't get to reap the rewards of their increased productivity? Are you OK with all these trends continuing (which is to say, the American middle class all but disappearing)? And if not, how do you suggest fixing them? I'm asking because from my perspective (being pretty leftist on economic issues), I see these as huge problems in the current American economy, and as dangers for the future. And from what I can tell, the conservative solutions haven't really proven successful. Do you see this differently?

Health care, if they don't outlaw private insurance, then the rich get private and everyone else gets the other. So many speak about Canada, but they have private insurance available in Canada, the rich pay for it, they do so because something isn't right with gov't health care. People who aren't rich are still stuck while the rich can still go to the doctor (mostly specialists) through private insurance. Here's the deal with Free Health Care, it won't ever be good, promise, never every, none of the promises people like Bernie make will ever come any where close to coming true so forever after Free Health Care, people like Bernie will blame people not like Bernie for somehow preventing quality health care. The blame game forever more will be about quality so if you think once Free Health Care is available, all is good, it will not be over, from that point on, it will be about quality and then Bernie's friends blame others for quality. It becomes the "if only" game, "if only" the other side would do this or that, all would be like Bernie said it would be. 22 trillion in debt.

      10 uur geleden

@Ron Gavalik I don't think only rich kids who can afford to go should go. I think money should never been a way into college. Only the people going for careers like you mentioned should go and only people who score high enough and show enough promise to make a successful run of it. I'm sure you understand though, many if not most college goers are not going to be doctors or engineers. They go for stuff that barley has a market and owe money. Going to college for "art" is insane to me..maybe an art school? But going to let's say u of m for art and owe tens of thousands of dollars so you can what? Pay it off making paintings or sculpting statues? And then people can do whatever they want. If someone wants to go $30,000 in the hole for going to a major-college so they can study music, then they get out and can't find a job in the music industry that's whatever. All I know is I don't want to pay for it

    • Ron Gavalik

      Ron Gavalik

      10 uur geleden

While I agree with you, it's a simplistic view. Yes, tradesmen are important to society, as are garbage collectors. But to imply engineers and physicians are not important is silly. If you're implying that only rich kids who can afford university should be allowed to become engineers and physicians, you're basically a monarchist. So, extending public education to public universities is the most reasonable position. This ain't some old west movie. It's real life, and we need top professionals.

Many people don't know this, but Bernie Sanders has solid foreign policy experience. When he was mayor of Burlington, he was a leader of the sister city movement. That initiative is when U.S. cities would team up with oppressed cities to show those people that freedom is possible via pursuit of democracy. His city was teamed up with a place in communist Russia, and the residents of that city 30 years later have a good handle on democracy. Last year, the Sanders Institute (started by his wife) hosted international leaders for a week long conference on combating global fascism based on falling wages and other metrics. They assembled a program called the Progressive International to get the people in each country to take back their lives. We just need to get him elected.

As a libertarian, we typically agree with Bernie about half the time. He correctly identifies a LOT of problems with the US. He seems reasonable. The main issue is his solution is essentially civilized enslavement to the state with enormous tax burdens. If he could enact his plans to eliminate the War on Drugs, demilitarize the US, etc. without the whole socialism part, I might be on board. Until then, here is hoping the libertarians bring some better candidates for 2020. I wish Justin Amash was running for President instead of being a rep. Guaranteeing anything means SOMEBODY is paying for it. He says the rich will pay for it, but the rich get rich by not paying for things. They have been gaming the system for millenia and they will continue to do so. Whats left of the middle class will foot the bill, even if they don't get a dime out of what they put in. The rich will stay rich and the laws will stay in place because we didn't solve the real issue which is the power the government can wield, and how important it is to be the highest bidder to leverage that power. The only way you fix the system is to remove the power of law to force people to do things that should otherwise be a private business transaction. We could easily fix medicare with little to no affect on price fixing by simply making the costs to the consumer transparent. Imagine the power a little bit of market competition would do to the medical industry. In the US, I have NEVER been presented with a bill before the work was already done. You cannot quickly shop for the most affordable doctor, and the medical industry should be subject to competition just like every other industry.

Russia destroyed the environment and Venezuela has gone from one of the wealthiest countries to below third world poverty levels. Way to go Joe.

Let's talk about Jeff Bezos. He's filthy rich, but the "he's worth over 150 Billion and pays almost no taxes!" style claims come from either ignorance or intentional misrepresentation. Almost all of that money is tied up in Amazon stock. That money goes directly to offering consumers goods and services which are beneficial rather than a new yacht (that comes from his salary -- and he's vastly over-compensated IMO). To get actual money, he must sell off stock, but the more stock he sells, the more the stock value drops. Because of disclosure laws, he has to warn stockholders months in advance that he's selling and tell them why. Once he sells that stock, he would immediately have to pay taxes on his capital gains. Likewise, Amazon pays no taxes because they reinvested all their profit (and then some) into expanding to provide more, better, and cheaper services to consumers and to hire more people. The only valid point in that entire talking point is overseas hedge funds. Those companies should pay such a high fined based on overseas holdings that the fine becomes worse than the disclosure. The big issue is either Bernie is ignorant or being deceptive. In either case, I don't want him in office making policies based on deception or ignorance.

lots of good intentions, but no clue about human nature and economics... it's an achievement to live 80 years and to remain so ignorant about very basic principles.

"Climate change is not just an American issue. We can do all the right things tomorrow but if China, Russia, Africa do not do the right thing, we will not make the progress we need." The US has 4.27% of the world population but produces 3 times as much waste per capita as i.e. China. Co2 emissions are improving worldwide (not in the US). The use of drink water, plastic waste. US only recycles 35% of their waste (i.e. Germany recycles around 65%). I think we are not at the point were the US should lead by example. But the whole world is moving in the right direction while the US is weighing down progress heavily. Vote Bernie if you care about the future of your kids and stop supporting your parents migrants demonising, reality distorting and gun supportive views that have no positive impact on this world and the harmony between us brothers and sister on this planet. We all come from one place and pursuing the current path means shitting, shooting and destroying where we eat.

Bernie voters are cowards. Let him go on the Ben Shapiro show, Steven Crowder show. Let him have a sit down with a well informed right leaning citizen of the USA who Bernie "supposedly" serves.

The right to bear arms as per the 2nd amendment is by it's nature the reason for owning assault weapons. The weapons that the 2nd amendment provides for are meant for killing people if necessary, they are protection against any and all enemies, domestic and abroad. They are for thwarting a tyrannical government from taking control of the people. Typically a tyrannical government has control of the police force and military and will use that control to assault the public so the notion that the public should not be as well armed as law enforcement and the military is nonsense. History teaches us that the tyrant in control disarms it's public at the earliest opportunity. The 2nd amendment is not in the constitution for allowing hunters to own guns. It's a protection for the freedoms in our nation and people like Bernie either don't understand this fact, or they are enemies of the people by suggesting things like, 'people should not own assault weapons'.. It's nonsense. That aside, to believe that banning assault weapons would keep them out of the hands of the violent criminal is also nonsense. Look at the Muslim attacks on US soil in recent years. Here are people who have assault weapons killing people in 'no gun' zones.. Bernie is just another left wing knee jerk reactionist proposing a solution that is not only useless to prevent the shooting crimes, but undermines the strength of the US under the constitution. ... Go home, Bernie.

I respect Bernie’s opinion but I will never vote for his socialist ideas! Not what this country is all about! Giving government the unprecedented power he is proposing is nothing but a long term disaster! I rather let people have options and enough freedoms to make their own decisions not government run our lives!

The only successful examples of modern socialism exist off the back of capitalism. Socialism cannot sustain itself historically and needs the excess that capitalism provides to survive. So the big question to expanding socialism is how big can your social programs get before you can't afford them and at what point does the taxation imposed on the citizens become tyrannical. Socialism not only has a history of inducing poverty but also of being a murderous ideology. Jordan Peterson talks alot about the mindset behind why Marxism and its siblings Communism and Socialism have been such murderous ideologies and I highly recommend checking it out. Bernie has elements of the envy doctrine that worry me. I don't think Bernie is a bad guy and I think he means well but I can't embrace mass expansion of socialism without serious concern of history repeating itself. On a side note gun confiscation in Marxist/Socialist countries turned out to be terrible for its citizens. Great interview Joe, get more presidential candidates on.
